DescriptionThe TH 60 West Gap project expanded an 8-mile stretch of TH 60 from Windom to Mountain Lake from a 2-lane to a 4-lane divided highway. The project was an important regional safety and freight improvement project, as it eliminates the last 2-lane segment of highway between Mankato, MN, and Sioux City, IA. The project expanded TH 60 to a 4-lane divided section by constructing TH 60 westbound on a new alignment and converting the existing two-way TH 60 roadway to carry eastbound traffic only.
A key safety design element of the project included extensive drifting and blowing snow modeling/analysis which resulted in the implementation of widened ditches, profile adjustments, and structural and living snow fence. At the onset of the project, Alliant recognized the significant earthwork scope of the project. Our team focused on optimization of the TH 60 WB profile to balance earthwork, reduce material haul distances, eliminate retaining walls and minimize impacts to Clear Lake.
Alliant’s environmental group authored the project CATEX and produced all required exhibits for permitting. Alliant’s traffic group generated the project Traffic Management Plan and developed an approach to construction staging that maintained TH 60 traffic within the project corridor at all times and limited the use of detours for cross street and local traffic.
