CSAH 40 Reconstruction

CSAH 40 in southern Carver County is a scenic corridor, popular with motorcyclists, that winds through a mix of rural residential and agricultural land and abuts the Minnesota River near the boundary with Sibley County.

With an aging pavement surface and narrow shoulders, the roadway needed upgrades to keep up with safety, mobility, and growth needs. Alliant partnered with Carver County to lead a corridor study identifying near and long-term improvements for the 10-mile segment beginning at the Sibley County border and extending to the City of Carver. A bidding package meeting Federal Aid requirements was thoughtfully prepared for the southernmost 4-mile segment along the scenic Minnesota River bluffs that met the safety goals of the project while minimizing impacts to the scenic and environmentally sensitive environment. The project included curve and slope corrections, widened shoulders, intersection improvements, other safety features, and stormwater management facilities.  Extensive evaluation of the site drainage was required to replace aging culverts, minimize slope impacts, and accommodate runoff from steep intermittent streams to flat farm fields.  We worked closely with local stakeholders to ensure the design balances functionality with the character of the area.
